Wipes Clog Pipes and Pumps!

Kingsland, August 12, 2025 — The City of Kingsland Municipal Utilities Department is strongly urging residents to stop flushing bathroom wipes down the toilet. Although many wipes are labeled as "flushable," they do not break down quickly like toilet paper and are causing sewer clogs that could result in sewage backing up into homes.

Household products such as baby wipes, cleaning towelettes, rags, and diapers, even if marketed as disposable or flushable, pose a serious threat to both private sewer lines and the city’s public sewer system. These items can create significant blockages in on-site sewer lines—particularly in older pipes that may already have grease buildup, tree roots, or other obstructions—leading to costly repairs for homeowners and businesses.

At a larger scale, wipes entering the public sewer system tend to build up and clog main collector lines and pump stations. These blockages often require expensive repairs or pump replacements, causing service disruptions and using valuable city resources.

To help protect the community’s infrastructure, please dispose of wipes, rags, diapers, and similar items in the trash—not the toilet. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed.

Together, we can keep Kingsland’s sewer system flowing smoothly and prevent costly damage.
