Natural & Beneficial Functions of Floodplains

Purpose

Floodplains are vital natural systems that help protect communities and the environment from the impacts of flooding. By allowing floodwaters to spread out over large, open areas, floodplains slow the speed of flowing water and provide natural storage during storm events. This process reduces the height of flood peaks downstream, helping to prevent damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Floodplains also allow water to seep gradually into the ground, replenishing underground aquifers and maintaining the flow of rivers and streams during dry periods.

Preventing Contamination

Healthy floodplains play a critical role in filtering water before it reaches sensitive ecosystems. Unfortunately, pollutants such as oil, paint, antifreeze, and pesticides can wash into floodplain waters during rainstorms, harming marshlands, streams, and the wildlife that depend on them. To protect these natural resources:

  • Dispose of hazardous materials through approved recycling or disposal facilities.

  • Avoid dumping waste or chemicals into storm drains, ditches, or waterways.

  • Maintain vehicles and equipment to prevent leaks that could run off into floodplain areas.

By keeping contaminants out of our floodplain, we safeguard local marshes and ensure clean water for fish, birds, and other wildlife.

Barrier Islands

Camden County is home to one of Georgia’s treasured barrier islands—Cumberland Island. These islands are more than just scenic landscapes; they are essential to coastal resilience and biodiversity. Barrier islands:

  • Act as a natural shield against hurricanes, absorbing wave energy and reducing storm surge impacts on inland areas.

  • Lessen the strength of tidal and wind forces, providing calmer waters behind them.

  • Support diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, marshes, and estuaries, which serve as critical breeding grounds for fish, shellfish, and migratory birds.

Protecting our floodplains and barrier islands not only preserves natural beauty but also strengthens our community’s defenses against flooding and storms.
