To promote the goals of restoring and protecting Georgia’s water resources, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GAEPD) requires that an entity (permittee) holding a permit for a wastewater treatment facility that intends to build a new water pollution control plant (WPCP), expand an existing facility, or that operates a WPCP designed for 1 MGD or greater conduct a Watershed Assessment and develop and implement a Watershed Protection Plan.
The St. Mary’s River Management Committee, with help from the University of Georgia (UGA), has created an interactive map that gives information about water resources in the four counties. This map helps people learn about water quality, river access points, and conservation efforts. It’s a helpful tool for anyone who wants to understand and protect the river and the areas around it. In addition, a Comprehensive Plan is a document that explains a community’s shared vision and goals for the future. It is based on feedback from many people in the community and includes actions that everyone can work toward. Every five years, the plan is updated using guidelines from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to review what was achieved and to improve on past successes.
